Why Do We Believe In Civil Resistance To End The Occupation And Build A Free And Democratic Society In Iraq?

Iraq Freedom Congress has chosen the civil resistance and mass mobilization route to build a free, civil, and democratic society and form a secular non-ethnic government that recognizes its people on the basis of their human identity in Iraq. This route involves general strikes, civil protests, demonstrations and all possible means available except violence to end the occupation.

We took this path not because we do not know how to use a weapon, or afraid of the US troops or even follow what Jesus said “If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other one also”.  We have not chosen the armed resistance although we recognize it as one of the means of struggle; however we consider it inappropriate tactic at the present time and we expressed our position and views in our statements and interviews. We preferred civil resistance because it is more effective with the least possible damage.

The Islamists and nationalist groups have been pursuing their agenda through violence causing a death of 2400 US soldiers and more than 150 thousand Iraqis since April 9, 2003. This means sacrificing 62 Iraqis for the carnage of every US soldiers. Therefore, with basic calculation we end up wiping out the entire Iraqi population for the 168 thousand US troops currently in Iraq!!!

Furthermore, the Iraqi people have extremely suffered from wars especially the last three years in which the armed groups and under the pretext of fighting the occupation have committed every vicious act to push their agenda. They attacked the energy sources, water and sewage systems, and turned the people’s neighborhoods and workplaces into battlefields.  It is obvious that these acts are the actual reason for the resistance not to exceed more than four provinces despite the huge resentment among the people.

On the other hand, staging a general strike in the oil sector, for instance, will have more impact on the US administration than killing a soldier along with tens of Iraqi civilians in an attack on a US convoy.  For that reason we strongly felt that having the union leaders of oil workers on our side and more than %40 of the union leaders in the IFC leadership is significant and great asset for us to succeed.

Also we adopted the civil resistance because it is part of the international and humanitarian anti war movement. Unlike some leftists, IFC’s policy is not anti-America, but against the inhumane policy of US administration. Thus IFC, for example, cannot turn its back to thousands of American mothers who have their sons and daughters serving in Iraq. The Iraqi mother suffers and feels pain when losing her kid because of the occupation or armed militia crimes; likewise the American mother agonizes and undergoes the loss of her kid in the war in Iraq. The human suffering is the same everywhere in our world. Our strength and support comes from this movement around the world and we are not giving up this policy and strategy at any cost.

The world record has proven the rightness of our view. The first Palestinian uprising (Intifada) has brought recognition for the Palestinian people of the right to establish their own state after Madrid and Oslo treaty. The second uprising was nearly achieving peace in the Middle East if it wasn’t for the suicide bombings of Hamas and Jihad who realized that the peace will undermine their positions and influences, therefore they well planned to destroy the second uprising. Also we have experienced how the apartheid regime was ended in South Africa with the power and struggle led by the African National Congress ANC.

In September 24th anti war and occupation front demonstrated in Iraq, the US administration in Baghdad who was frightened, attempted to provoke the demonstrators by deploying troops and surrounding the event and began acting in a way to scare the people and end the event as soon as they could.  In Basra also on the same day, the Islamist forces were horrified of the anti war demonstration and staged a parallel demonstration to draw the attention away from the anti war demonstration however they failed miserably. In addition the student uprising led by the Students Union that is a member organization of IFC against Al-Sadir militia in Basra. This event forced the local government to close down the offices of Al-Sadir in Basra and made them apologize for their violations of human rights formerly in the newspaper and respond to the student demands.

In conclusion, the civil resistance is more efficient, costs less, and able to mobilize the global opinion around our cause. At the same time we reserve the right to protect and defend ourselves from the sectarian gangs who carry out a sectarian cleansing on a daily basis by all means. IFC is saving no effort to organize and educate people not to direct their guns toward their neighbors or follow the sectarian thugs.

This policy is written and documented in the IFC manifesto. Opening “People Houses” is one of IFC essential tactics to achieve safety and restoring civility in the people’s living areas and workplaces.
