US Labor Against the War Letter of Protest July 8, 2007 Condoleeza Rice Secretary of State U.S. Department of State 2201 C Street NW Washington, DC 20520 Via Fax: 202‐647‐2283
Dr. Robert M. Gates Secretary of Defense 1000 Defense Pentagon Washington, DC 20301‐1000 Dear Secretary Rice and Secretary Gates: U.S. Labor Against the War has been informed by the Iraq Freedom Congress (IFC) that a unit of the U.S. military recently accompanied an Iraqi military unit in an unprovoked armed attack on the home of Abdalhussien Sadam, leader of the IFC Safety Force in Baghdad. The attack took place at 3:00 a.m. on July 4, 2007. This raid involved small arms fire and use of grenades, resulting in severe injuries to both Abd‐alhussien Sadam and his daughter. The attackers stormed the home, seized Mr. Sadam and left his daughter bleeding on the floor. Two days after the abduction, his body was found in the Forensic Center in Yarmouk Hospital. Words are inadequate to describe our outrage at this heinous criminal assassination at the hands of U.S. and Iraqi military forces. It reflects the complete bankruptcy, immorality and criminality of U.S. policy in Iraq and hypocrisy of the U.S. and Iraqi governments in professing their commitment to democracy in Iraq. To government’s record of torture and indiscriminate attacks on civilians we must now add participation in death squads. We call upon you to immediately identify all those who participated in, helped plan, direct and execute the raid on Abd‐alhussien Sadam’s home, and his abduction and subsequent murder, and that they be promptly brought before an international tribunal for war crimes. We further demand that the U.S. and Iraqi governments make a public accounting of this incident, and that you make a full accounting of these and all related activities to the appropriate committees of Congress. You must apologize to and compensate Abd‐alhussein Sadam’s family for their loss and the damages they suffered and further, apologize to the Iraqi Freedom Congress and the Iraqi people for the egregious crimes committed by U.S. and Iraqi military personnel and any others who participated in or aided these crimes. The U.S. and Iraqi governments must cease all such armed assaults and other actions to suppress non‐violent political critics of the Iraqi regime and U.S. occupation, and execute the immediate and complete withdrawal of all U.S. military forces and private contractors from Iraq. Yours truly, Kathy Black, Gene Bruskin, Maria Guillen, Fred Mason, Bob Muehlenkamp and Nancy Wohlforth USLAW Co‐Convenors

U.S. LABOAGAINST THE WAR July 8, 2007 Nouri Al‐Maliki, Prime Minister Jalal Talabani, President c/o Iraqi Embassy 1801 P Street, NW Washington, DC 20036 Via Fax: 202‐462‐5066 Via E‐Mail: admin@iraqiembassy.org Dear Sirs: U.S. Labor Against the War has been informed by the Iraq Freedom Congress (IFC) that a unit of the U.S. military recently accompanied an Iraqi military unit in an unprovoked violent attack on the home of Abd‐alhussien Sadam, leader of the IFC Safety Force in Baghdad. Your government’s military forces are now participating in death squads reminiscent of those that operated so brazenly with US. government funding, training and cover in El Salvador and Nicaragua. Rather than democracy, what the U.S. has brought to Iraq is civil strife, factional divisions, torture, murder and criminal disregard for the lives of Iraqis of all religious and political persuasions, regions and ethnicities. We call upon you to immediately identify all those who participated in, helped plan, direct and execute the raid on Abd‐alhussien Sadam’s home, and his abduction and subsequent murder, and that they be promptly brought before an international tribunal to be tried for war crimes. We further demand that your government make a public accounting of this incident. You must apologize to and compensate Abd‐alhussein Sadam’s family for their loss and the damages they suffered, and further, apologize to the Iraqi Freedom Congress and the Iraqi people for the egregious crimes committed by Iraqi military personnel an any others who participated in or aided these crimes. This was the fourth recent attack of this sort on leaders of the IFC, an organization committed to peaceful political protest against the occupation and sectarian division, and to a truly democratic Iraqi state free of all foreign interference. This appears to be a pattern – to suppress legitimate political dissent, encourage sectarian competition and conflict, and perpetuate U.S. political and military control, whether directly or through proxies. It is hypocritical to speak of building a democracy in Iraq while violently suppressing dissent. The U.S. and Iraqi governments must cease all such armed assaults and other actions to suppress non‐violent political critics of the Iraqi regime and U.S. occupation. We have called upon the U.S. government to execute the immediate and complete withdrawal of all U.S. military forces and private contractors from Iraq. We call upon our Congress to cease all funding for this criminal enterprise. Yours truly, Kathy Black, Gene Bruskin, Maria Guillen, Fred Mason, Bob Muehlenkamp and Nancy Wohlforth USLAW Co‐Convenors
