Founding Statement

To The Students Who Will Mark the New Academic Year

Over six years of occupation, the Iraqi students were exposed to fierce attacks by sectarian gangs and terrorist groups who directed a huge share of their actions such as kidnapping, killing on the basis of identity and bombing schools in the cities of Baghdad, Basra, Mosul and Ramadi towards students. Besides; being exposed to threats, provocations and harassment of religious and sectarian forces who have been continuously imposing their rituals and religious laws on students and attempting to impose gender discrimination in universities and colleges through separations between male and female students and blatant interference into students affairs.

This government however fell short in fulfilling its obligations of dealing with these burdens and let the students face such conditions alone.

What the students go through today in the (new Iraq) is part of a biggest picture of tragedy in which all Iraqis go through and exacerbate further as a result of continued occupation which in turn is part of the greater scheme of imposition of all forms of slavery on Iraqi society.

The development and progress of any society are conditioned with the development and progress of education at all levels. Stability and security, political and civil liberties, a society free from poverty and hunger are the reasons to create a healthy environment in which one can advance and progress.

At the same time, the absence of leadership among students, a leadership that is able to lead the student movement to defend the just rights would also work to perpetuate the tragic situation of schools, institutes, colleges and universities.

The religious forces who are associated with the sectarian militias, argue that they don't allow politicization of science and universities and that they should be kept away from politics while the same forces exercise abhorrent roles through the formation of sectarian student unions.

Iraq Freedom Congress calls upon students on the new academic year to regroup to win their rights for best level of education as well as advance their work towards freedom, civility, and secularism for all Iraqis. The occupation and sectarian gangs are familiar with the students' movement who has a history of standing in the forefront of defending freedom and prosperity.

Iraq Freedom Congress calls on students to join its ranks and rally around the banner of freedom and prosperity.
