When Turned Down By Students, Islamic Groups Resort To Threats As Usual

A pro-Islamic magazine called Tullabya (Student) has published an article attacking students at the Media and Information School at the Faculty of Tigris in Baghdad. The students had refused an invitation to join the Islamic student associations.

The article describes the students as promoters of prostitution and drugs within the school. The same magazine also published an article in a previous issue which claimed that “a number of faculties at Iraqi universities prevented religious speeches and lectures so they can be replaced by dancing and prostitution."

The Shiite Islamic forces that dominated campus life through armed gangs see that the barrier of fear they created among students is collapsing. It’s also evident that rejection of, and anger against, Islamic forces is growing among students in all universities in Iraq.

The campaign launched by the Islamic forces, including threats of defamation, are desperate attempts to revive the Islamic student associations that oppose the growing secular movement in the universities. The Student and Youth Bureau of Iraq Freedom Congress have taken a stand in opposition to the Islamic associations in the faculty.

They have lead activities at colleges and universities to prevent the Islamic forces from imposing religious rituals on students and intervening in their lives.
